<-- Back to the list of birth stories
End of August 2001 - I was about 34/35 weeks when I went for a scan - I'd changed hospitals and they were worried that I was measuring more than I should have been (about 5/6 weeks extra) so they had me in for a scan. The radiographer asked me if I knew that my baby was breech and I said that I didn't. The consultant booked me in for a c-section on 7th September but he wanted me to go for an ECV (External Cephalic Version) first to see if they could turn the baby from the outside. They couldn't and it was the most uncomfortable experience I'd ever had (apart from the m/c). So I was booked in for my c-section.
Friday 7th September 2001 - I rang the hospital at 7.30am only to be told that they were busy and that I couldn't go in yet and I was told to ring back about 10.30am (I hadn't had anything to eat or drink since 9pm the night before). When I rang back they told me that I could go in about 12 noon.
We got to the hospital only to be told that there was an emergency c-section before mine and they'd have to wait and see how long that took as they don't normally do planned sections on an afternoon - needless to say I wasn't too impressed!!
I was finally taken down to theatre at 4pm. Lee left the room about 4.05pm as he nearly fainted (he hates hospitals with a passion) - they'd only just attached me to the blood pressure monitor!! Lee was brought back in when I'd been 'trussed up like a turkey' as he puts it. Reece was born at 5.05pm but as I lost over 3 times the amount of blood that I should have it took the surgeon longer to finish than it normally does - I didn't get out of theatre until 6.15pm.
I was in hospital with Reece until Monday 10th Sept when I begged the midwife to let me go home as I was really missing Lee.
The first week including everything that happened on September 11th was really strange. I don't think we were prepared for parent hood but more or less got into the swing of washing, sterilising, making bottles, changing, feeding, bathing Reece.
