CarrieF had an unexpected homebirth with Madison
I got out of the bath and tried to get dressed I got as far as putting a t shirt on, Lee had phoned his mum to come and sit with Joe and then came back up to me at which point I was nearly screaming with the pain , Joe got out of bed and wanted to know what was going on, Lee told him the baby was coming and took him downstairs, at 6am Lee’s mum arrived and Lee decided to call an ambulance as my contraction’s were now only 30 second’s apart, I asked him not to but for once he didn’t listen to me (and I was so glad afterwards), I was still stuck on the toilet, Joe was downstairs with his Nan feeling very scared because mummy was screaming and he sat with his finger’s in his ear’s.

I had been having tightening’s and period pain’s on and off for 6 day’s before Madison decided to arrive, every night I went to bed hoping this was it and every morning I would wake up with no pains and feel disappointed. Madison was due on the 7thJuly. On the 7th I started having tightening’s again but thought nothing of it as they were not regular and not painful, I went to bed as usual and again my tightening’s stopped, so I got up again and walked about the house until 2am, nothing happened the pain’s had completely gone again.

I then woke up at 4:30am on the 8th July with terrible pains just above my pubic bone that felt like I had a bad tummy, so I got up and went to the toilet, the pain was so bad I couldn’t get off the toilet, I wanted to try and time the pain’s so I managed to get back to my bedroom for a few second’s and realised the pains MUST be contraction’s as they were roughly every 2 minute’s apart, I had to rush back to the toilet and I couldn’t get off, the time went really quickly and the pain was really bad, DH (Lee) was still sleeping and so was our son (Joe).

I could hardly move by now and kept getting on all four’s and then getting up again and then sitting on the toilet, I eventually decided no matter how much pain I was in I had to wake Lee up, I got to the bedroom and it was now 5:30am, I woke Lee and told him I thought it had started, he woke all dazed and ran me a bath, I got in and out as quick as I could as the pain was sooooooooooooo bad and the contraction’s were now only about 40 seconds apart.

I was on the toilet and Lee was on the phone to the ambulance when I started bleeding, I assumed it was my show but it scared me to death as it was proper blood and not what I thought a show would look like.

The ambulance arrived about 6:20am and the paramedic’s told me after my next contraction I had to get off the toilet and get on my bed as the contraction’s were about 20 second’s apart, so I did this, the paramedic’s asked if I needed to push and I said I don’t know, then I gave a little push and felt a bulge between my leg’s, I asked Lee what was there and he said nothing, then I said yes there is and he said it’s ok it’s the babies head.

Madison was still in her bag of water’s as she came out, I gave 2 little pushes and she was there, when she arrived I said to Lee, is that it, is she here, he said yes, I then asked why she wasn’t crying just as she let out a cry which was a lovely sound. Lee was crying too at this point being the proud daddy and watching Madison come into the world in her water’s, he loves telling people that bit, as her shoulder’s came out my water’s broke.

I had no pain while pushing at all, which I didn’t expect, the paramedic told me if I needed to push that they would not take me to the hospital, I told them they had to take me as I needed pain relief but it was far to late, they gave me entinox (sp?) but I couldn’t use it, so I had no pain relief either.

Lee ran downstairs’ and said to his mum and Joe that it was a girl and his mum was gob smacked as she hadn’t heard a thing, then Lee came back upstairs and took the baby down to meet her brother, while I waited for the placenta to come out, The mw arrived and gave me an injection and away came my placenta, she weighed Madison and we certainly got a shock then as she weighed 8lb 1oz and our son was only 6lb 8oz so I expected another little baby.

I had a few blood clot’s after the birth and the mw had a good dig about and pulled them out, she said I had one more and sent me to the toilet to see if it came out then but it didn’t, so I had to wait.

I had a one degree tear which didn’t hurt afterwards at all which surprised me a lot as I was in agony after having my son.

We didn’t have to go to hospital at all as we were both well, so I went and had a bath and got dressed, feeling slightly fragile by my unexpected quick delivery, Lee and I had talked about a homebirth earlier in my pregnancy but decided against it but we got one anyway lol.

The funny thing with it all is that my mum live’s right opposite us and was meant to be at the birth, the night before Maddie arrived my mum decided to stay at my brother’s house which is right opposite the hospital where I should have been, when Lee phoned her she said she would meet us at the hospital, we didn’t think to ask why she wouldn’t just come here as we didn’t know she was at my brother’s, she started to run to the hospital as she could hear me screaming and knew the ambulance was on it’s way, Lee phoned with in minutes to say the baby was here, my mum then waited at the hospital for us to arrive only to find out we were not going to hospital so an ambulance driver gave her a lift with siren’s blaring all the way to our house.

In the evening I decided to have a bath and as I got out a huge blood clot feel out of me, it was the size of the babies head and it absolutely petrified me, I screamed for Lee, who phoned my mum and she came over and phoned the hospital who told me to go in and take the clot with me, we got to the hospital around 9 and they wanted us to stay in but I didn’t want to, I wanted to be with my babies, so I went home after being checked out, my iron level’s had gone down to 9.6 so I had to be put on more iron as I had lost quite a bit of blood with the clot. I think the clot was more scary than the birth but I have been fine since, I did have an awful lot of back pain after having Maddie and couldn’t walk or stand for more than 5 minute’s but I’m much better now, I guess it was something to do with her speedy delivery.

Her Apgar score was 9 after one minute and 10 after 5 minutes.
